  1. I would like to try voice acting, but I have no knowledge at all of how to get started. Where do I go and what do I do to get started? Your site seems to assume anyone reading it already has worked in this business.

    • I address beginners as well as experienced performers. As I say–if you want to be an actor– start acting! Audition for a play, do stand up, open mic at a coffee house, make your own show for YouTube– any performing is good experience and can show you if you are well suited to acting. What ever seems fun or interesting, do that– connect with those who are doing what you like, take classes, do workshops, start your own company to do performances– anything you want. Just get going and do it! Good luck!

      • where do you find places and plays. and how would you start if you were 17 and probably limitedwith stuff.

      • Comedy club, local children’s theater, college or school that does plays, choir, library shows, make your own audio tape. Look around!

We’re trying to become voice actresses, and I want a real voice actor’s thought on if we need to improve or not, and please be honest.

We think we suck, and we really want to make a movie over the summer, but not a crappy one.

    • Who cares what I think of your voice? Make your movie, crappy or not but have fun doing it. Learn from that and do better with your second movie Keep at it. Don’t ever be afraid that you suck. Everyone was awful or amateur once. Don’t worry about that. Go for it!

  4. Dear Mr. Baker,

Your website is very informative and inspiring!! Thank you so much!

I am a classically trained soprano and I would love to dive into voice acting as a career. Could you recommend any female voice actors’ websites or blogs that are big in the industry right now?

    Thank you for your time,

    D Hewitt

  5. hi, i havent seen any replies since may but i decided to take a chance. im a 16 year old and id LOVE to work in voice acting in an animation/cartoon or video game field of work. ive got some set characters with various voices that ive practiced daily (drives my parents nuts but they fully support me) ive practiced various accents including russian, british, african, and can usually pull off a feminine voice also.
Where should I get started? im in the drama club at school, ive participated in a few major roles in my high school’s plays, and im always complimented for my ability. im just not sure where to begin. will i have to wait 10 years before i can try and put myself out there? if so, how else can i build up on experience and make sort of a resume that i can use to get gigs when im good and ready?
if i get answered il be really honored and happy that i can get some insight on a topic that not many people wonder about

    • Sounds like you’re already on your way. For me, any performing can provide an opportunity to learn and grow. Try anything that looks fun- plays, open mic, puppets, make your own audio sketches, make your own movie, play reading with friends for an audience– anything. If there’s nothing around, make your own fun. Not enough opportunity? Check out what’s up in a bigger city nearby. Keep moving and learning! Good luck!
